Three men wearing balaclavas and armed with machetes stormed a Co-op demanding cash.
Detectives are now appealing for witnesses following the armed robbery, which happened at the Co-op in Adlington.
Officers were called to the store on Bolton Road at 9.43pm on Thursday following reports three men wearing balaclavas and armed with machetes had threatened staff.
The suspects, who were all wearing dark clothing, escaped with a quantity of cash from the till.
No arrests have been made at this stage and enquiries are ongoing.
T/DI Ellie Gomerson, of South CID, said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the members of staff involved.
"Although they were left shaken by this robbery, thankfully they were not injured.
“I know the public will be appalled by this incident and I would like to reassure them that we have a dedicated team of officers assigned to this case.
"We have also increased reassurance patrols in the area as a precaution.
“I am now asking the public to come forward if they have any information or CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage which could assist our investigation.”
