This photo shows arguably two of the most famous chimneys in East Lancashire.
The Nori brickworks at Altham produced the world renowned Accrington brick, valued for its toughness. There are several theories about why they were known as Nori bricks.
One was that the sign on the chimney should have read ‘IRON’ but it was put on the wrong way and another that the letters were put in the wrong way in the brick moulds so that each brick came out with Nori stamped on it.
No-one actually knows but the Nori name put Accrington on the map, The chimneys were felled in 1981.
