A RECRUITMENT drive has been launched to encourage people in Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale to become special constables.

Lancashire Constabulary's Pennine Division wants to enlist more special constables over the next few months and wants to hear from people who want to make a difference to their community.

They will be holding a recruitment event at Burnley Police Station between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday February 6.

This will provide an opportunity for members of the public to talk to special constables and gain an insight into their work.

Special constables have full police powers and perform the same duties as regular officers.

Their work can range from general patrol, to the policing of football matches and road incidents. They work flexible hours with a minimum requirement of four hours per week.

PC Chris Collett said: "We do not ask for specific qualifications, but are looking for candidates with honesty and integrity, a positive approach, ability to work within a team, a willingness to learn new skills and to develop existing ones.

"The high visibility of the Special Constabulary is of real importance to the policing in our communities and speaks volumes about the dedication, skills, training and professionalism of the Special Constabulary Officers.

"Becoming a special constable allows members of the public to really get involved and make a difference to the community in which they live.

"Special constables work with local people, regular officers and partners to tackle concerns raised by local people. It can offer a great sense of achievement and I encourage people from all walks of life to seize the opportunity and make a difference."
