FOUR new caretakers will be litterpicking in Bacup, Haslingden, Rawtenstall and Waterfoot.

In Bacup the new caretaker will be Edward Whittle, with Ghulam Ahmed in Haslingden, Susan Fagen in Rawtenstall and Paul Birt in Waterfoot.

They will be responsible for looking after the appearance of the borough's car parks including litterpicking, graffiti, streetcleaning, tending to flowerbeds and keeping litterbins from overflowing.

They can also report any flytipping and look after the public toilets.

Rossendale Council says the workers are an investment worth £102,000 to improve the borough.

Coun Judith Driver said: "This is one of the most important jobs the Council does and has a big impact on how shoppers, visitors, business people and potential investors perceive the borough.

"We want local people to be proud of where they live. As a council we are now doing our bit to improve our town centres but we need people to work with us, ensuring that they do not drop litter or gum and reporting anyone who they see doing anything that is detrimental to the borough's appearance."
