A MAN who escaped with a rucksack full of whiskey went back for another shot later the same day.

Blackburn magistrates heard this time security at Morrisons in Bacup were waiting and Ross McIntyre was detained as he left the store with another bag full of booze.

McIntyre, 46, of Ashburn Flats, Heywood, pleaded guilty to two charges of shoplifting. He was fined £20, which was set against time in custody, after the magistrates heard he was already serving a prison sentence. He was also ordered to pay £141 compensation on release.

Graeme Tindall, prosecuting, said a security officer noticed gaps on the shelves in the spirits aisle and checked CCTV. It showed McIntyre loading bottles of whiskey into a trolley and then transferring them to his rucksack before leaving the store at about 1.20pm.

He was seen entering the store again at 3pm and repeated the theft.

"This time security were waiting outside and challenged him," said Mr Tindall.

"Initially he denied taking anything but £120 worth of whisky was recovered from his bag."

Ian Huggan, defending, said if the matters had been dealt with at the same time as his client was sent to prison they probably would not have affected the sentence which does not end until March.
