HUNDREDS of runners took part in the revived Blackburn 10k as the popular event returned for the first time in two years on Sunday (December 12).

The run, hosted by RunThrough, began and ended at the home of Blackburn Rovers Football Club, Ewood Park.

The successful event was last held in 2019 but due to Covid-19, the run, along with many others across the country had to be postponed.

The course headed out onto the closed roads of Blackburn for a fast 10k route that took in the town centre of Blackburn before making its way back on a looped route toward Ewood Park.

Lancashire Telegraph:

This was described as 'a new and unique course for a brand new innovative event for Blackburn'.

An event village with music, food and entertainment was also located at the Blackburn End in the stadium.

The Blackburn End itself was open for spectators who managed to catch a glimpse of friends and family as they finished their 10k runs.

Matt Ramsden of Blackburn Harriers was the fastest of all competitors on the day, completing his 10k in just 31 minutes and 24 seconds.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Lucy Rawlinson took the honour of fastest female, finishing her race in 41 minutes and 12 seconds.

A 'kids race' took place after the adult event, where another Blackburn Harrier, Alex McKinlay, won.

Many competitors took to social media after the race to proudly present their medals and well wishes for fellow runners.

Phil Bedson, on Twitter, said: "Loving this bad boy [medal]... first 10k for two years and sub 56 minutes so happy with that time."

Lancashire Telegraph:

Umer Patel said: "A year later, me and Nayim Vaid have managed to complete the Blackburn 10k.

"A huge thank you to everyone who donated last year and showed support. May Allah accept all of our efforts."

Thousands are expected to have been raised for charity with many running to raise funds for charities such as the cancer-focussed Macmillan and East Lancashire Hospice.

Scott Slater, also on Twitter, said: "I'll take a 40.36 10k during my 'off season'."

A spokesperson for Westholme Sport said: "Our staff and Inspired Sixth Form team ran the Blackburn 10k today. "Heroic running all round!"
