The daughter of a woman who ran a cat rescue sanctuary from her home in Darwen, has said the charity will not continue following her sad death.

Maureen Savage, who ran Moggies Cat Rescue from her house in Stansfield Street, died at the East Lancashire Hospice on Monday November 29, following a six-year battle with cancer.

Maureen, 75, spent more than 20 years caring for and saving the lives of countless cats and kittens across East Lancashire, and was solely responsible for Moggies Cat Rescue.

Throughout her selfless campaign, she fundraised and worked three jobs to keep it running.

Following yesterday's article, which included details about an expected takeover of Moggies Cat Rescue, Maureen's daughter, Keeley, said: "It's lovely to know how much she meant to people but the charity will now lie with Maureen.

"It is not being taken over by anyone else, and as per her wishes, her cat rescue will rest with her.

"Moggies was, and always will be, the sole responsibility of Maureen.

"While there were many volunteers from fosterers to fundraisers, all decisions were ultimately hers.

"I have been asked to say that if anyone is considering any donations over the Christmas period then Alley Cats and Kittens (on FB) worked very closely with Moggies and would welcome donations."

There are now no cats left in Moggies and no outstanding vet bills, and the charity will disband - the name lying with Maureen and her memory.

Maureen leaves daughters Keeley and Elise, son-in-laws Pascal and Pete, grandchildren Jordan, Charlotte, Catherine and Yannick, and many close friends.

The funeral service will be held at Pleasington Crematorium on Tuesday December 14 at 2.15pm.

Her family have asked for people to wear something ‘Christmassy’.

Family flowers only, donations to Alley Cats and Kittens and Friends of Rescue would be gratefully received.
