A man arrested because of his erratic behaviour was found to be carrying two screwdrivers in his pocket.
Blackburn magistrates heard that Nick Worley told police he was carrying them for his own protection in case anybody "jumped" him.
And the court was told that only weeks earlier Worley had been made subject to a community supervision order for a similar offence.
Worley, 39, of Merchants Quay, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon. He was sentenced to 120 days in prison suspended for 12 months, made subject to community supervision for 12 months and ordered to pay £100 costs.
Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said police were called to Merchants Quay after a complaint by a neighbour that Worley had been causing a disturbance.
When he was interviewed Worley said when he came home from work he drank a bottle of vodka.
Rachel Adamson, defending, said Worley was an alcoholic and the week he had spent in custody had enabled him to focus his mind.
