22 Lancashire restaurants have been praised in a prestigious restaurant guide - nine of which are in East Lancashire.
Now in its 28th edition, AA’s ‘The Restaurant Guide 2022’ provides food lovers with breakdowns of restaurants by county, including a detailed description of each destination, information on latest chef changes, opening times, sample menu prices and images of many of the featured locations.
Assessments of AA-inspected establishments are based on the experience of the Hotel and Restaurant inspectors on the occasion
The restaurants are then awarded 1-5 ‘rosettes’ depending on the inspectors assessment.
Moor Hall Restaurant in Ormskirk was the only Lancashire restaurant to receive five rosettes and Northcote Restaurant in Langho was East Lancashire’s highest scorer - but there were plenty of other quality eateries mentioned in the listing.
Here are the nine East Lancashire restaurants which feature in the guide:
Northcote Restaurant
Rosettes: Four
Northcote is east Lancashire’s highest rosette winner and the restaurant received its own spread in the guide.
It is described as a “long established northern gem” that is situated in a beautiful environment.
Lisa Goodwin-Allen oversees the cooking and uses her years in the field to create classic dishes, some of which have a special Lancashire twist.
The vegetarian menu, filled with mouth-watering dishes such as courgette with crispy flower and cucumber.
A spokesperson for Northcote said: "It makes us very proud to be recognised by the AA in the annual Restaurant Guide. Having maintained our four AA Rosettes and being among the top restaurants in the UK again this year is a huge honour and acknowledges the culinary excellence the team strives to achieve on a daily basis at Northcote.
"Lisa and her team produce outstanding dishes using only the very best seasonal ingredients, and we ensure that the wines are meticulously paired to create the wonderful guest experience we are proud of."
Freemasons at Wiswell, Whalley
Rosettes: Three
Rustic flavours and mouth-watering appetisers helped this Whalley restaurant secure three rosettes.
Chef, Steven Smith, helps to create the dishes with cheese tartlets topped with pickled mushrooms and slow-cooked suckling pig being mentioned in the guide.
Steven Smith, The Freemasons at Wiswell, says:“We’re proud to retain our 3 AA Rosettes and to be part of the small number of pubs in the country to hold this accolade, plus we hold 5 stars for our room offering too.
"After such a tough time for the industry over the pandemic, it’s great to see that the team’s work hasn’t gone unrecognised”.
Bertram’s Restaurant, Burnley
Rosettes: Two
This restaurant is located within Crow Wood and described as a “stylish place” with a wide ranging menu – and impressive Prosecco cocktails.
White Swan at Fence, Fence
Rosettes: Two
Inspectors said that the White Swan said this pub “creates something special” as it is a traditional British pub which also serves home-made damson vodka.
There is also an on-site chef delivering powerful flavours.
Coach and Horses, Bolton by Bowland
Rosettes: Two
The cosy wood burning stoves were praised by inspectors, as well as the friendly and professional staff.
The inspector commented: “Expect evolving seasonal menus in a modern British style.”
The Millstone, Mellor
Rosettes: One
The pub, which is owned by Thwaites Brewery was praised for its ales and “feel-good” menus which offer pub classics as well as a “few global flavours”.
The Fence Gate, Burnley
Rosettes: One
The inspector said the small gin bar and meat aging room are some of the focal points of this restaurant.
They added: “Expect friendly and attentive service, hearty portions and a convivial atmosphere. “Menus display a confident combination of quality pub dishes alongside more refined modern British offerings.”
Wilfred’s, Burnley
Rosettes: One
Despite its modern exterior, inspectors say that Wilfred’s “has a rich, plush, sophisticated appeal”.
The food has an Italian theme and puts a modern twist on ethnic dishes.
Breda Murphy Restaurant, Whalley
Rosettes: One
The vibrant and contemporary restaurant has received heaps of praise in AA’s restaurant guide.
It’s described as the ideal place for a ‘friendly’ get together and eat food with Irish and British influences.
