Blackburn community groups were invited to present honours at the national Asian Media Awards in Manchester.
The 9th Asian Media Awards ceremony, hosted by Sky Sports news presenter Bela Shah, took place at the Emirates Old Trafford on Friday night (October 29) with Good Morning Britain presenter, Adil Ray and Eastenders star Jaz Deol amongst the winners.
As a tribute to former Lancashire Telegraph and Asian Image contributer and event organiser, Umbreen Ali who died last year, community groups and volunteers were invited to present awards on the night.
Teenager Sara Hussain (above) of One Voice Blackburn presented the Best Stage Production honour to eventual winners Full English. The ground breaking stage play is based on the real, lived experiences of Natalie Davies and her family. It details the experiences of women who were welcomed onto a Bradford estate after marrying Pakistani men.
Sundas Bakhat, also of One Voice presented the 2021 Sports Journalist of the Year honour to Premier League reporter and broadcaster Vaishali Bhardwaj.
Sundas said: ‘I was extremely honoured to present the Sports Journalist of the year award at the Asian Media Awards. It was such an exhilarating and also emotional evening as we remembered the inspirational Umbreen Ali.”
Members of the Humraaz Women’s organisation presented the Creative Media Award to the Football Association who were presented the honour for their campaign ‘Football and Me’.
A special invitation was also extended to the ten 2020 winners and tributes were paid throughout the night to all those who were unable to be at the awards after a tumultuous 18 months.
