THE demolition of Darwen Leisure Centre began today when the first bricks were removed from the building.
Contractors moved on to the site after asbestos found in parts of the building was removed and the area was made safe.
The new £12million centre, scheduled to open in late 2009, will feature a 25-metre competition standard swimming pool with a movable floor and spectator seating, fitness suite, health suite, sports hall, café and changing facilities.
The work has been funded by Blackburn with Darwen Council and Sport England lottery funding.
The historic front of the building, will be removed at the end of the 12-week demolition period and will be put into storage until the new centre is built.
Construction of the new building is scheduled to begin in June.
Coun Michael Law-Riding, executive member for leisure and culture for Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: "Everything is still going to plan and we are looking forward to watching the progress on the site.
"Residents will also be happy to see the changes.
"It is an exciting time for the people of Darwen.
"They will soon have a fantastic new facility."
