A DRUNKEN mother who befriended another lone woman in a Burnley nightclub helped herself to her purse, the town's magistrates heard.

The court was told how Kelly Davies, 26, took the cash and left the purse in the ladies' loos. She could not believe she had done it, the court was told.

Davies, who had no previous convictions, stole £80 and when she was later arrested she had £71 on her.

The defendant, of Talbot Street, Burnley, admitted theft. She was given a six-month conditional discharge and must pay £8.20 compensation and £50 costs.

Richard Taylor, defending, said Davies, who lived with her six- year-old son, had behaved totally out of character.

The defendant did not go out very often, had arranged to meet friends and they did not show up. She felt a bit lonely and let down, went into the club and befriended the victim.
