A CAMPAIGN to get interactive speed signs in Blacksnape has succeeded after 18 months' effort by community associations.

Coun Julie Slater, the East Rural Network and Blacksnape Community Association have been calling for the signs, which can be changed to show different messages, after a series of incidents in the village.

Two signposts will be erected before the end of the financial year in April, one either side of the main road through the village.

Coun Slater said: "This news has made my day. All our hard work has paid off - I'm really pleased.

"Kids are being put at risk by people driving too fast down the hill and cars are being written off.

"People come to this lovely area and then have to put their houses on the market because their cars keep being crashed into and their garden walls get knocked down.

"The traffic has been getting worse because of the Darwen town centre roadworks. People come down here as an alternative and use it as a rat run.

"To get anything done you've got to plead your case, and I've done a lot of pleading."

The signs, paid for by Blackburn with Darwen Council, will complement new traffic-calming measures to be put into place on Roman Road.
