A PASSENGER has died after a car overturned on the M65.

The incident happened shortly before 1.30am on Wednesday when a white Audi A4 overturned between junctions 11 and 12 on the eastbound carriageway.

A man in his 20s, from Nelson, thought to be the passenger of the vehicle, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

A second man, thought to be the driver and also in his 20s and from Nelson, was taken to hospital with head injuries, not believed to be life threatening.

Investigators and emergency services were at the scene throughout the night and all morning with traffic diversions in place.

The road was fully reopened at 12.40pm, police said. Officers are appealing for information and urging any witnesses.

Sgt Michael Belfield said: “These are very sad and tragic circumstances and my thoughts are with the man’s family at this difficult time. An investigation is underway into the circumstances around the collision and we would encourage any witnesses to come forward.”

Drivers were urged to find alternative routes when travelling or follow diversions.
