A HIT and run driver is being hunted after a 13-year-old boy suffered a broken left foot after being knocked over in Rishton town centre.

The incident happened at 4.30pm on Thursday as the boy crossed High Street at the junction with Harwood Road, near to the Lotus garage.

PC Gary Taylor from the Road Policing Unit at Blackburn said: "The boy entered the road and has been struck down a car that hasn't stopped.

"He was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital with a broken foot and stayed overnight for checks.

"All we know was that the car that hit him was small and silver with a male driver.

"We are appealing for witnesses to come forward."

One local resident said that children getting off buses after school in the area where the accident happened often ignore the traffic lights and walk across the road despite oncoming traffic.

Bob Flood, headteacher at Norden High School in Rishton said: "I can confirm that one of our pupils was injured in an accident and went to hospital.

"I can't confirm that it is that particular accident, but I suspect so.

"It is very difficult to cross roads in this area with all the roadworks going on, and I would ask motorists and pedestrians to take extreme care and show consideration for people crossing the road.

"We do emphasise road safety at this school and we have two members of staff who man bus stops to prevent any incidents going on there.

"We are also very thankful to the council who have instated a lollipop lady at the Harwood Road junction, on what is a very busy road."
