A MAN who was pestering his dad for money to buy drugs reacted angrily when he refused.

Blackburn magistrates heard Liam James Thompson threw a metal peg which hit an oven and rebounded into his dad’s jaw.

Thompson had claimed it was a reckless act but Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said that was not accepted by the prosecution.

Thompson, 33, of Higher South Street, Darwen, pleaded guilty to assaulting Kenneth Hewitt, criminal damage to an oven and criminal damage to a window. He was made subject to a community order for 12 months with 30 days rehabilitation activity requirement and nine months drug rehabilitation requirement. He was fined £40 and ordered to pay £280 compensation.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said Mr Hewitt was at home at 2pm and his son was pestering him for money.

“When he refused the defendant picked up a metal peg which he threw at his dad,” said Mr Robinson. “He dodged out of the way and it hit an oven, causing damage to that, and rebounded and hit the victim on the jaw.”

Mr Hewitt left the house and when he returned later his son had broken in by damaging a window.

“When he was arrested he made threats about returning to his father’s house and causing more damage,” said Mr Robinson.

Janet Sime, defending, said her client was adamant he didn’t throw anything directly at his father.

“He says he threw the peg at the oven and it rebounded,” said Miss Sime.

“He was under the influence of drugs and desperate to get some more.”
