A MAN who had been thrown out of an Accrington town centre pub went home and armed himself with a knife.

Blackburn magistrates heard Daniel Corbett was on his way back to the Bees Knees when his partner called the police.

She eventually managed to persuade him to hand the weapon over to her before he could use it in any way.

Corbett, 31, of Maricourt Avenue, Accrington, pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in a public place. He was remanded on bail for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Graham Tindall, prosecuting, said police were called at 1.10am by the defendant's partner.

"She was concerned because he was heading towards the town centre with a large kitchen knife," said Mr Tindall. "The police were there quickly and the knife was taken off him by his partner."

When he was interviewed Corbett said while he was in the town centre he had some kind of mental breakdown and hadn't been in is right mind when he armed himself with the knife.

Richard Prew, defending, said his client, who had no previous convictions, had admitted the offence in interview and pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

"He has mental health issues which he has started to explore himself since the commission of this offence in August," said Mr Prew.

"He says he was never going to do anything with the knife other than use it to frighten someone. Fortunately his partner was able to disarm him before anything more serious happened."
