A DOG owner whose pet suffered "horrific" burns from a spilt cup of tea has been banned from keeping animals for two years.

Deborah Hargreaves, 48, of Cobham Road, Accrington, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and was also ordered to pay £200 in costs at Hyndburn Magistrates' Court.

RSPCA inspector Lisa Lupson said the tan cross dog, ironically called "Lucky" was in a "bad way" when it was reported to them.

Hargreaves told the court her son had broken into her home with his friend and accidentally spilt a cup of boiling tea over the dog on October 12.

She claimed she did not notice the burns until a few days later.

It was when she saw fur had started to come off she found out what had happened and treated the injury with wet flannels, the court was told.

However the RSPCA received a complaint and an officer investigated.

Inspector Lupson said: "It was one of the most severe cases I have ever seen in terms of injuries.

"Animals can't express the pain they are in like humans can, but the dog had suffered horrendous burns which covered the whole left side and required urgent veterinary treatment.

"Despite her name she wasn't so lucky but is now looking for a new home and someone to take care of her. She is quite old not but would make someone a lovely pet."

Lucky is staying at the animal home in Altham. She is a medium sized black dog and is described a "really friendly" and "lovely" dog.

If anyone is interested in giving Lucky a new home they should contact the animal centre on 01254 231118.
