A man who fell down the stairs while under the influence of alcohol died after a brain injury – a coroner has concluded.
Sebastian Karski died after suffering head injuries as a result of an ‘unwitnessed’ fall down the stairs of his home on Queen Victoria Street, Blackburn.
An inquest at Preston Coroners Court heard how the 38-year-old, who was born in Poland, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital on March 27, 2021 after his fall.
While in the hospital Sebastian had a CT scan which showed that he had a brain haemorrhage because of the fall.
Dr Ola Abbas, a consultant in Critical Care, took him to surgery to perform a craniotomy to try and reduce the swelling on his brain and stop the bleed.
He sadly showed no improvement, began to deteriorate further, and died on March 27.
Coroner James Newman said: “Despite the complex surgical procedure there was no improvement and he was taken back to the ward.”
A toxicology report conducted on Sebastian’s admittance showed ‘profound alcohol consumption’ which Mr Newman concluded was potentially a reason for his fall.
Sebastian also had an injury to the of his head, believed to be related to the fall.
Mr Newman concluded that Sebastian’s death was an accident.
He said: “He had an unwitnessed fall down the stairs at home while under the influence of alcohol.
“He has sustained a catastrophic head injury and despite maximal surgical and medical care, he passed away at the Royal Preston Hospital on 27 March 2021.”
