TRIBUTES have been paid to well-known singer from Darwen who died on his birthday.
David Parsons was nicknamed ‘Whistler’ as he was regularly heard whistling around the town especially in the market.
Also known as ‘Percy’, the 76-year-old was a singer for band The Shotguns who once supported 1960s Merseybeat chart-toppers The Searchers.
Son Scott said their dad was an entertainer even when he went on holiday in Greece.
“He was a compere and we used to go caravanning up at Gisburn at Tom Farley’s site.
"He got up on stage and started singing and telling jokes and the next year they booked him on.
“He had a big character even though he was only 5ft 7in and I have nothing but good memories of him. He was a hero.”
“As kids we could hear him sing as he was singing around the house and for his 50th birthday we managed to get the band together again.
“He had a great voice and was really talented.
"I have done a few vocal sessions so I have followed him and I always wanted to sing with him but unfortunately I did not get the chance.
“I have created a playlist to him. It's got I Like It by Gerry And The Pacemakers on as I have memories of hearing someone singing it and it was my dad.”
David had a passion for sport as he represented Lancashire in swimming and also played football for Corinthians.
The AFC Darwen supporter also played bowls for the Everton Street team just like his dad Richard.
Scott said: “He had been doing it for six years and when I used to go to watch him play and he played poorly so he blamed me for it!
“We are looking to have some sort of memorial for him at Everton Street with a plaque on one of the benches.”
David was a loving husband to Carol and a devoted father to Scott and Kylie and a very special grandfather and great grandfather. A funeral service and committal will take place at Pleasington Crematorium on August 12 at 1.30pm.
Scott said: “Dad was always wearing shorts when he was bowling and when we went on holiday. So we have said if anyone wants to wear shorts in memory of him then that is fine as I will be. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends and loved being around his family too. It has been really nice to have messages of support from family and friends."
During his working life he worked as a lorry driver at Crown Paints for 30 years.
