PRICES rose to nearly £2,000 at the first dairy cattle sale of 2008 at Gisburn Auction Marts.
A packed ringside ensured there was no drop in last year's strong prices, with heifers particularly in demand.
Topping the sale was a pedigree Holstein heifer from JG Hall and Son, Gargrave, Skipton, that sold for £1,960. The animal was 10 days calved and giving 31 litres a day.
Regular seller Raymond Johnson, Felliscliffe, Harrogate, achieved £1,920 and £1,700 with two newly calved heifers.
Norman Fort, Silsden, Keighley, sold his newly calved heifer for £1,780.
Newly calved heifers averaged £1,526 and newly calved cows levelled out at £1,185. Richard Turner and Son was the auctioneer in charge of the sale.
