And as the officers watched, a Mitsubishi Shogun with a completely flat front tyre thundered past towards Bolton.
The officers got back in their car and followed but did not try to stop it.
The driver was eventually arrested when he stopped outside his home in Bolton.
Nadeem Afzal, 23, of Halliwell Road, Bolton, admitted driving with excess alcohol, while disqualified and without insurance.
He gave a reading of 92 against the legal limit of 35 and had been disqualified for two years in December 2006.
