Give us some history behind the pub: The Royal Arms has been a pub since 1863 and it was in the hands of Thwaites brewery for over 100 years. Current owners Robin and Ruth purchased the pub in early 2019 and immediately submitted plans for a much-needed extension to create a brand new kitchen and bistro cafe along with an extended outdoor area. When the pandemic hit us we decided to try and turn this unprecedented time into a positive and begun the demolition of the old kitchen and the build of the new extension which is now fully open.
Is food served? Yes, we serve breakfasts from 9.30am daily with the exception of Mondays and from noon we serve traditional home cooked pub classics like homemade cheese and onion pie, beer battered fish and chips. Our chips are hand cut and twice fried and we are becoming quite well known in the area for them.
Is there a beer garden? Yes we have outdoor capacity currently under the restrictions for 70 people. Outside of Covid restrictions this will double.
What is the most popular drink you sell? We have a great selection of local cask ales and our premium Birra Moretti lager is a winner on hot days Most memorable moment for the pub? The opening of our new bistro on April 12 after what seemed a lifetime of lockdown.
Have you faced many challenges? Yes like all landlords up and down the country the pandemic has been very damaging, however we have tried to use this time as a positive and build our extension. Thankfully we had funds behind us to enable us to carry out the work so now let’s hope we can all look forward to some prosperous times.
What's the best thing about running a pub? Meeting some wonderful customers from all walks of life and receiving the many lovely comments via social media and Tripadvisor about our superb staff. They have all been working extra hard under these trying times but at the end of the day we are one big happy family.
What's the perfect hangover cure? Whatever your last drink was that gave you the hangover... a large one of them!
