PROUD mothers have been showing off their New Year babies after giving birth to the newest arrivals of 2008.

Lyndsey Wilkinson, 26, was in labour for two days before her son Jenson Jayden Thomas was born at 3.07am yesterday at Burnley General Hospital.

Lyndsey, of Mary Towneley Fold, Burnley, said the experience of giving birth had left her "completely exhausted".

She had been due to give birth on December 19 but Jenson, who weighed nine pounds and one-and-a-half ounces, was eventually born by caesarean.

Lyndsey said: "I was in labour for so long I'm just glad Jenson has been born and he is healthy.

"It hasn't even registered that he was one of the first babies to be born in the New Year."

Lyndsey, a medical sales rep, was joined for the birth by her partner Malcolm Thomas, 36.

He said: "Jenson has been very good so far. He is a placid baby and we are looking forward to showing him off to our close family."

There was only one other baby born at Burnley General on New Year's Day morning.

Tasmiah Khan, 27, of Livingstone Road, Brierfield, gave birth to a little girl who hasn't yet been named.

The eight pounds and five ounces baby was born at 12.40am.

Tasmiah, who already has three children, said: "It is a lovely start to the new year.

"She is such a peaceful little girl."
