BARGAIN hunters are being urged to be vigilant when shopping in the January sales.

Police have issued advice to prevent shoppers being targeted by opportunist thieves.

It comes as part of Lancashire police's crime crackdown Operation Shepherd during the festive period and New Year.

Assistant Chief Constable Wendy Walker said "The sales are always one of the fun parts of Christmas and we want people to enjoy the experience of finding a bargain or two. People do need to take extra care though and don't become a victim of crime."

Police have issued the following advice to help people avoid falling foul to thieves: l Don't leave shopping on display in your car. Especially if parked up.

l Don't carry more money than you need to and ensure wallets and purses are secure in bags or pockets.

l Don't leave bags unattended in shops.

l Always close car windows and the sunroof and lock the doors, activating any security devices when leaving your car unattended.

l Park with care, particularly at night or if you are leaving the vehicle for a long time and if possible, park in a busy, well-lit area.

l Never leave cash, credit cards, cheque-book, mobile phones, vehicle documents or valuables in the car.

l Don't return to your car to drop things off. If you have to, make sure they are well hidden and always check out the area to see who may be watching.
