UPDATE: By 10am , the fire had been brought under control and firefighters were conducting a thorough search of the property.

Firefighters tackled a blaze at a derelict mill.

At around 4.30am on Saturday crews were sent to Cowling Mill, just off Cowling Brow in Chorley.

Six fire engines as well as an aerial ladder platform are in attendance and residents are being asked to close their windows and doors due to smoke.

A spokepserson for the fire service said: "We were called just after 4:30 this morning to Cowling Mill in Chorley.

"We have SIX fire engines and an aerial ladder platform in attendance at the moment.

"If you are in the area and can smell smoke, we recommend that you keep your windows and doors closed for the time being."

Firefighters used water from the nearby canal to extinguish the fire.

Fortunately no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is now under investigation.

At around 7am, Chorley Council  officials said they had been made aware of the blaze and were also advising anyone living nearby to close all windows and doors.

Cowling Brow is closed while crews deal with the incident.
