ROAD safety is of a high concern in East Lancashire, where there have been many disputes on the speed at which motorists travel on roads near homes and schools.

In May, Conservative County Councillor Peter Britcliffe expressed concerns over lack of improvements to combat speeding in Broadfield in Oswaldtwistle.

At the time, he said: ““It is acknowledged that speed is 8mph above the limit for the road and I know residents feel threatened by the speeding traffic.

“How fast does traffic have to go before traffic calming measures are implemented?”

The Lancashire Telegraph asked readers where they think speed cameras should be in place in Blackburn and it seemed while some people thought boy racers were ruining the roads, others disliked the idea of cameras.

Whalley Old Road and Birley Street in Blackburn were the top two choices of roads which would benefit from having cameras installed.

Councillor Abdul Samad Patel of the Little Harwood and Whitebirk said: “Yes. There should be a camera on Whalley Old Road as sometimes there are cars being very fast.

“A serious accident is waiting to happen.”

In an article from 2020, the Lancashire Telegraph revealed Whalley New Road as a place with cameras.

Jill Comberbach said: “Birley street, daisyfield for definite. There are loads of cars speeding down Birley Street all the time and my car was hit with one and drove off.”

Andy Dixon said: “Everywhere. Sick of certain people thinking they're at Monaco, weaving around behind me, trying to overtake. Morons.”

Last year, The Lancashire Telegraph revealed where all the speed cameras were in East Lancashire.

Included in the list were:

Accrington - Blackburn Road 30mph

Blackburn - Livsey Branch Road 30mph

Buncer Lane 30mph

Grane Road 50mph

Roy Wallbank said: “In the areas known to have a lot of speeders and boy racers e.g Audley etc.”

Csaba A. Barta: “I would put one on Hallam Road, Nelson.”

Rachael Duxbury said: “Intack - Whitebirk Road at junction with Accrington Road stop all the light jumpers and 'Johnny boy racers' flying through the junction.”

Garry Andre Agus said: “What they need is cameras that pick up poxy cyclists going through on red, or the footpath to dodge the lights.”

Other responses included Whalley Old Road, Revidge Road, Sunnybower and Furthergate.

But not everyone thought camera were a good idea, with several people angry at the thought of camera being placed everywhere.
