FIREFIGHTERS have spoken about the importance of having a working smoke alarm after a blaze at a property in Burnley.

Three fire crews were called to a kitchen fire at a house in Newman Street at 10:44pm last night.

The occupants of the property had managed to get to safety by the time firefighters arrived, and one male refused treatment for smoke inhalation.

A hose reel and four ventilation units were used.

The fire was small and contained in the kitchen.

A spokesperson for Burnley Fire Service said: "The property had a smoke alarm but it wasn't working.

"I want to stress the importance of testing alarms regularly to make sure they're working."
