AN ARMED robber walked into a jewellery store and stole thousands of pounds worth of goods in a 'smash and grab' raid.
Staff were getting ready to close for the day at Janet Isherwood, Kay Street, Rawtenstall, when the man entered the shop at around 4.45pm yesterday.
He smashed the display cabinet with a "large silver tool", possibly a hammer.
He fled with a stash of jewellery, said to be worth a substantial amount of money'.
Two members of staff were working at the time, but police said they were not threatened.
A second man was waiting outside the shop on a stolen yellow motorbike.
However the men were seen abandoning the bike nearby before making off on foot.
Police are searching for the weapon.
Detective Sergeant Phil Turner, of Rossendale CID, said that shortly before the offence, a witness saw two men in motorcycle helmets on the car park at the rear of Kay Street.
He said staff at the jewellery store had heard a motorcycle revving its engine at the side of the shop.
DC Turner added: "A yellow Triumph 900cc motorcycle, stolen from Bury on December 15, was found abandoned on the car park. It is believed the offenders made off on foot.
"Fortunately no-one was injured. The man didn't say anything when he entered the store. The two staff members were able to lock themselves in a secure area when they realised what was happening.
"It was literally a smash and grab. He was in there for a matter of seconds."
Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
The offenders were described as around 5ft 8ins, of medium to slim build, wearing jackets.
One was wearing a red motorcycle helmet with a white horizontal stripe; the other helmet was dark.
Police are now carrying out door to door inquiries and conducting searches in the area. Officers are also reviewing CCTV footage.
Shop owner Ian Howarth declined to comment.
Officers are appealing for anyone with information to contact Rawtenstall CID on 01706 237442 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
