TWO SISTERS who run an online homeware business together have won a top industry award.

Silver Mushroom, which was founded by Rebecca Kane from her home in Tockholes, offers a range of homeware, kitchenware and wellbeing products.

Ms Kane’s sister Emmie Brookman joined the firm in 2014 and since then the two sisters have risen to new heights, with their efforts now rewarded with an Excellence in Online Retailing Award from the Excellence in Housewares Awards industry body.

Ms Kane said: “We were totally humbled, shocked and over the moon with this award.

"Silver Mushroom has seen lots of challenges over the last decade, from starting the business from scratch to facing the current climate crisis and understanding our impacts as a retailer on the environment. Not to mention surviving the global pandemic.

“We wouldn’t be where we are today without our completely and utterly fabulous team, for whom we are very grateful.”

The company has come a long way since Ms Kane started selling a selection of kitchen and homeware items online in 2011, storing stock under her bed.

Over the last 12 months Silver Mushroom has experienced an upturn in sales with people spending more time at home and shopping online. The company has grown from six members of staff before the pandemic to around 30.

The rapid expansion has also led the sisters to taking out a lease on a larger warehouse on Ainscough Business Park in Wigan, so they can meet demand and continue to observe social distancing guidelines.

They are now planning to build on their recent achievements with a target of £2 million turnover for this year.

Ms Kane said: “We really want to thank everyone who has shown us love and support along the way, and of course our wonderful customers who put their faith in our products.”
