POLICE have arrested four teenagers over the baseball bat attack at a troubled Burnley high school.

And today uniformed officers were due to be at Hameldon Community College, Byron Street, Burnley, in a bid to prevent any further incidents.

Meanwhile officers said they had not uncovered any evidence that the attack was racially motivated.

Police were called to the college on Friday lunchtime after an intruder entered the premises and started fighting with a 15-year-old Asian student.

A second intruder then stepped from a large crowd of watching pupils and hit the youngster over the head with a baseball bat, according to police.

Both attackers then fled from the school Officers arrested two boys, aged 16 and 17, on Saturday on the suspicion of wounding. Police said one was a former pupil.

They have been bailed pending further inquiries. The conditions of their bail are that they do not enter the school premises.

Last night police revealed that a further two boys, current pupils aged 15, were also being quizzed after being arrested on suspicion of wounding or assault.

They have also been bailed pending further inquiries and banned from going to their school.

Chief Inspector Ian Sewart said: "We are working very closely with the school and have been in regular contact with the head teacher over the weekend.

"Work is ongoing between the school and police to reassure parents and pupils that such behaviour will not be tolerated and that positive action will be taken by both parties should any offences be committed.

"As a force we treat any incidents such as this very seriously and these further arrests are indicative of our commitment to resolve this issue and further inquiries are in progress.

"Although as yet we have not uncovered anything that would suggest the attack was racially motivated, we are aware of some concerns and will be looking into this issue as part of a thorough investigation."

The victim of the attack was initially taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment and is now at home recovering with his family.

During the incident another 15-year-old student, who is understood to be from the Duke Bar area, suffered a fit a short time later and was also taken to the Blackburn hospital for treatment. Police said he was discharged on Friday night.

A Lancashire police spokesman added: "Police are continuing to investigate the incident, which is being treated as an isolated incident involving a small number of people."

Hameldon, which was launched under the Building Schools for the Future scheme last year replacing Ivy Bank and Habergham High schools, has had a troubled first 15 months.

In the first five weeks of its operation the police were called to the school 19 times, to deal with incidents ranging from assaults and rowdy behaviour to thefts.

The school was placed in special measures by education watchdog Ofsted last March, after widespread concerns over teaching and standards.

But it when Ofsted inspectors returned to the school earlier this term they found matters to be improving.
