A THUG who was placed on police's most wanted' list after going on the run has given himself up.

David Alan Steer walked into Burnley police station after members of the public contacted Lancashire Constabulary with sightings.

Steer was jailed for two-and-a-half years in September 2006 for a street robbery on a youngster in the early hours.

Steer was also convicted of two further assaults on teenagers.

Police placed him on their most wanted list after Steer was freed early from prison but went missing having not complied with the terms of his release.

He is now back in prison serving out the remainder of his sentence.

Inspector John Clucas, who is co-ordinating the most wanted' campaign for Lancashire police, said this should send put a message to criminals.

He said: ""This should send out a clear message that if you are imprisoned you must obey the rules.

"We will leave no stone unturned until we bring them back."

"This is the direct result of the publicity.

"Through calls to the police when sitings of him confirmed he was still in the Burnley area we deployed officers and although he evaded the attempted arrest he must have realised he was wanted.

"The net was closing in on him and it was best for him to hand himself in."

Steer, of Dall Street, Burnley, was dealt with at the town's crown court alongside his brother Michael, then 17, of Pheasantford Street, Burnley, and Charlene Nicholson, 17, of Clover Street, Bacup.

Michael Steer was jailed for 12 months, for the same offences, and Nicholson, then expecting a baby, was given a 12-month referral order.

The robbery victim had withdrawn money from a cash machine when he was attacked first by David Steer, then by his brother and girlfriend.
