MOTORISTS are being warned to keep their cars secure in the run up to Christmas.

The warning comes as part of a crackdown on Christmas crime in Lancashire. Operation Shepherd will run throughout December focusing on reducing crime and disorder across the county.

Motorists are being urged to remain vigilant particularly when defrosting cars and police are asking people to follow crime prevention advice to avoid falling victim to criminals this Christmas.

The warning was aimed at people in Great Harwood, Clayton-le-Moors and Rishton because of particular concern in those areas,but applies to all motorists Police community support officer Steven Charnley said: "At this time of year, we often see a rise in the number of thiefs operating and I urge car owners to remain vigilant and not leave anything on display.

"It only takes a few seconds for a thief to drive away in your car. Make sure you stay with your car when defrosting it. If you see anyone acting suspiciously contact police on 0845 1 25 35 45."

Police advice is; l Make sure you don't leave your belongings on show. Store them in the boot or take them with you. Don't help thieves with their Christmas shopping.

l Always remove your car stereo and satellite navigation system and take it with you when you leave the car.

l Have a car alarm fitted and use it, or fit a Thatcham-approved electronic immobiliser.

l Never leave your car unattended whilst waiting for it to defrost.

l Don't leave your car keys in a place where they can be seen or accessed from outside your home. Burglars can steal easily keys through a letterbox.
