THE ornamental fountain was very much a feature of Blackburn’s Lord Square when the shopping centre was redeveloped.
But by 1987 when this photo was taken, the fountain had been converted into a flower bed.
Ostensibly it was to add to the ‘greening’ of the town centre, providing small areas of nature to break up the brick, tiles and concrete. But it was possibly also because the fountain was a target of pranksters who would pour washing up liquid into it and watch the bubbles threaten to take over the square.
Remember the ramps on Lord Square too in the background?
