CHRISTMAS got off to a soggy start at Whalley's annual Pickwick Night.
Organisers said last night's weather was the worst it had been since the popular event began 19 years ago.
But even a torrential downpour failed to dampen the spirits.
The traditional Christmas curtain-raiser included fairground rides, Victorian dancers and charity refreshment stalls.
The fun started at 6pm with a carol service, accompanied by the Salvation Army band.
And Ribble Valley mayor Doreen Taylor helped pick the best Victorian costume from a line-up of six youngsters.
Cathy Riley, secretary of the Whalley Pickwick Committee, said about 3,000 people turned out, similar to last year.
She said: "In spite of the rain, it's still a fantastic turnout."
