A NEW £1.4million sports centre kicked off in style when Manchester United star Ryan Giggs attended its official opening.

The Premiership legend visited Rawtenstall yesterday to open the Don Pacey Sports Centre at Alder Grange Community and Technology School.

The centre, dedicated to former headteacher the late Don Pacey, who had the original vision for it, is funded jointly by the Calder Road school and a Big Lottery Fund grant, and includes a sports hall and fitness suite with the latest equipment.

Headteacher Iain Hulland said: "The sports centre is all about creating opportunities for everyone in our community to aspire to and achieve excellence in their own sphere and at their own level.

"Ryan Giggs personifies this ideal and it was absolutely fitting that he be here today."

During the day the centre will be principally used by students but in partnership with Rossendale Leisure Trust it will also be a community provision.
