A CHARITY is warning families in East Lancashire not to drag themselves into debt by overspending this Christmas.

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) has drawn up an advice list so people do not spend money they do not have on buying presents over the festive period.

CAP, which has a base at Redeemer Parish Office, Jack Walker Way, Blackburn, offers debt advice and is currently working with 23 families in the area.

Sheila Fielding, manager of the Blackburn centre said: "Christmas can be such a difficult time for many, especially those in debt.

"However, I am delighted to be able to offer a solution that empowers people to take control of their finances once more."

Tips include: l Save up for Christmas instead of paying for it on credit. If you have not saved up this Christmas start saving for next Christmas.

l Create a Christmas budget based on what you can afford and stick to it.

l Just give presents to the people you want to, don not feel you have to give someone a gift just because they have given you one.

l Making presents is often cheaper and shows more time and thought has gone into the present.

The Blackburn branch of CAP opened 18 months ago with the aim of clearing people's debts within five years.

When it takes on new clients staff negotiate with creditors to set up a repayment plan.

The charity also appoints a dedicated support worker to the families throughout the repayment period.
