Blackburn’s Mohsin and Zuber Issa have taken over the ‘iconic’ British business brand, Asda.
The brothers, founders of EG Group and TDR Capital, a UK-based private equity firm, have together agreed to acquire Asda from Walmart for £6.8 billion.
Here are 13 things you may not know about the brothers and the EG Group.
1. The brothers grew up in the Brookhouse area of Blackburn.
2. Euro Garages was founded in 2001 following the acquisition of a single petrol station in Bury.
3. The company operates nearly 6,000 sites across 10 countries now.
4. In 2017 the brothers bought a house in London’s Kensington for £25million.
5. In the summer of 2019 The EG Group acquired American based Cumberland Farms which operates approximately 600 convenience retail stores and fuel stations. The purchase of Cumberland Farms took the EG Group’s network to a total of nearly 1,700 stores across the country, operating in 30 states.

6. Earlier this year the EG Group acquired 146 KFC restaurants across the UK and Ireland in a multi-million pound deal.
7. The company will open a 150-bedroom Hampton by Hilton hotel near with a conference and banqueting centre on the outskirts of Blackburn next year.

8. The EG Group (previously known as Euro Garages) football team plays in the Blackburn Combination League and won the league title for the first time in 2020. On occasions Mohsin has been spotted watching the amateur team at games.
9. In February it was announced the brothers had acquired Stanley House Hotel and Spa in Mellor earlier this year.
10. Staff moved into the new £35m EG Group Headquarters in Blackburn in August.

11. The ISSA Foundation is a charity run separately from EG Group by the brothers and their family.

12. The charity linked up with East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust in 2018 and made a significant donation at the time to provide equipment for the neo-natal intensive care unit, the diabetes service and the children’s ward.
13. In March 2018 members of the Issa Family were at the opening of a new hospital Children's Play area made possible with a generous donation of £100,000.
