A TEENAGER who subjected a member of the public to an "unprovoked" assault and stole his phone held a knife to a 16-year-old's throat the day after.
Burnley magistrates heard how James Timothy Brooks, 18, had never been in trouble before racially abusing the innocent Asian man and hitting and kicking him.
The following day he held a knife to a teenager's throat after losing his temper when he could not find his bank card.
Brooks, of Coal Clough Lane, Burnley, admitted theft and racially aggravated assault on August 23 and affray on August 24.
He was given a 12 month community order with supervision and the Think First programme. He must also pay £200 compensation to victim Rafiq Islam.
The bench said they believed the offences were a "blip" in his hitherto good behaviour.
Wendy Chappell, prosecuting, said Mr Islam was in Burnley centre when he was approached by the defendant and another youth.
Brooks punched Mr Islam and shouted racist comments.
She said the next day Brooks was at home and demanded to know where his bank card was. He turned over a coffee table and then picked up a knife and held it to the 16 year old's throat for a few seconds.
Mark Williams, defending, said: "In my view he's not a racist person.
"He used some racist language."
