A LOCAL amateur football team have earned a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play at the Emirates Stadium.
Graham Engineering Redskins will play at the home of Arsenal thanks to a tongue-in-cheek remark on a national radio station.
The Pendle Charity League side were one of two clubs to win a competition run by talkSport and Lucozade Sport - and manager Ian Fraser went live on air to try and set up a match between the two winners.
"It was only an off-the-cuff remark but it worked," said Fraser whose side are mid-table in Division One.
"I said I would book Turf Moor if the other team, who come from London, could set up a match at the Emirates Stadium or Stamford Bridge. We didn't mind which one it was.
"I was only joking and didn't for once think they would set it up."
Fraser thought nothing of it until former Spurs and Chelsea defender Jason Cundy - who is now a presenter on talkSport - turned up to hold a training session and deliver the news.
"We couldn't believe it when he first told us," said Fraser who organised the training session at Nelson FC's Victoria Park.
"There were a lot of smiling faces when he told us and I think they are still smiling.
"The trouble is I didn't think we had so many players because suddenly everyone seems to think they are a Redskins player!"
The club entered talkSport's Cundy Football League competition for Sunday football league teams across the country.
The Barrowford-based team were the northern winners along with Bafana Bafana from London.
The prize included a new kit and equipment, a season's supply of Lucozade Sport drinks and two training session from Cundy. It also involved going live in air to give weekly up-dates on the club's progress.
"There were supposed to be a few of us going on but, apart from team-mate Lee Corns, the other lads got radio shy," added Fraser.
"But it doesn't really bother us so we've been going on air to talk about the team."
Cundy, who once famously scored a freak' goal while playing for Spurs against Ipswich in the 2002/03 season, travelled up to East Lancashire to hold the training session which also included a team from Lucozade Sport who were on had to pass on advice about diet and fitness.
"Jason was a top lad," said Fraser. "I have spoken to him a number of times on air but it was really nice to meet him.
"He was really down to earth and worked with us for a few hours."
Graham Engineering Redskins will play Bafana Bafana on Monday May 5, just two days after Arsenal's last home game of the season.
"We're just counting down the days now," added Fraser.
"I don't know how it is going to effect or league form because, come January, none of the lads are going to want to get injured for fear of missing the trip.
"We're planning on take a coach down but it might turn out more than that because the world and his wife wants to go.
"After all, it's not every day you get to play at the home of Arsenal."
