Firefighters have battled through the night to contain a huge blaze on Blackpool's Central Pier.

Crews were called at 3.19am on Friday after receiving reports that a building on the pier was 'well alight'. 

The fire was quickly brought under control but at 5am, 10 fire engines were still at the scene.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Firefighters from Blackpool were called to reports of a fire at Central Pier, Promenade, Blackpool in the early hours.

"On arrival firefighters requested further assistance, with an additional eight fire engines being called to attend along with the Command Support Unit and Aerial Support Unit.

"Firefighters found a building on the pier well alight on arrival which they brought under control using hose reel jets.

"We currently have 10 fire engines in attendance at a fire on the Central Pier, Promenade.

"Firefighters have the fire under control but are still in attendance.

"Please be advised that some roads nearby are currently closed."

At 6am, Incident Commander Mark Winder provided an update saying the fire had involved a worskhop and one ride. 

Initially four fire engines were sent to the scene, but more resources were quickly called upon to assist. 

A number of roads were closed and are due to re-open before lunchtime. 

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
