A 34-year-old man is seriously ill after it is believed he walked out in to the path of a car in Barnoldswick.

An investigation has been launched and poilce are appealing for witnesses after the man was knocked over by a dark Renault Megane in Essex Street at 9pm on Saturday.

Officers are still trying to piece together what happened but believe the man walked out in to the path of the car.

The man was rushed to Airedale Hospital and was later transferred to a hospital in Leeds where police have described his condition as 'serious but stable'.

The road was closed for three hours while police made inquires.

Sgt Martin Bishop, of the Colne-based road policing unit, said:"A man was taken to Airedale Hospital and later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary after a road traffic collision at 9pm on Saturday.

"It appears that the man was on the road at the cross roads by Barnoldswick police station when he was hit by a dark coloured Renault Megane that was travelling towards Salterforth.

"His condition has been described as serious but stable."
