IT was one hell of a night as Blackburn’s newest nightclub opened its doors for the first time in 2004.

Around £1.5 million had been spent on transforming the former Utopia club above Lord Square into Heaven and Hell. In previous guises, the club had also been Peppermint Place and the Cavendish.

Local celebrity, the Telegraph columnist and pub owner Margo Grimshaw was invited to perform the cutting of the ribbon to open the new club and their were a couple of special guests from Emmerdale - Cleveland Campbell who was playing Danny Daggert in the TV soap and a young Kelvin Fletcher, now known for taking the Strictly Come Dancing title.

The club boasted three different dancefloors - Heaven, Hell and Purgatory - all offering revellers different types of music. The club also had its own dancer who performed on special stages.

Hundreds attended the opening night. Club owner Peter Clarke, who ran six other venues across the North West, said: “I’m delighted it has gone really well. We had plenty of people from Blackpool who came over but there were also plenty of people from my home town, Blackburn.”

Two years later the club would be placed into insolvency and finally closed its doors in 2007
