A THINK tank is being established to create a £50,000 gateway into the new-look Rawtenstall town centre.
Work is under way on the new Edenfield bypass roundabout which will welcome thousands of people into the town from Ramsbottom and Greater Manchester.
Developers Hurstwood have teamed up with Mid-Pennine Arts for what they hope will provide a focal point for Rossendale. The property giant is giving £50,000 for the project, which forms part of its £60million Rawtenstall regeneration programme.
Hurstwood senior planner Lynne Symons said: "It is important it makes a lasting and favourable impression. It will say a great deal about the area.
"We know we will have to get it right and that is why we have turned to Mid Pennine Arts. They have years of experience in this area. We are also putting together a panel of representatives from Rossendale council, Hurstwood, Mid-Pennine Arts and the Chamber of Commerce."
Mid-Pennine Arts Director Nick Hunt added: "We want to create a unique and distinctive landmark."
Mid Pennine Arts has recently led the partnership that conceived and created the Panopticons, new landmarks for East Lancashire including Halo for Rossendale.
Council leader Coun Duncan Ruddick added: "I am delighted something like this is being created for Rawtenstall and I look forward to seeing the results."
