ROAD tax dodgers in Burnley have been hit with fines after a three-day crackdown by police and the DVLA.

The campaign caught 46 offenders by utilising the latest Automatic Number Plate Reading technology to check registration numbers against the DVLA database. Vehicles without tax were clamped.

PCSO Nigel Keates said the number of people breaking the law is falling, but stressed the authorities would not become complacent.

He said: "Our swoops, including those done as part of this operation are starting to have an effect."

PC Richard Collopy, CBM for Queensgate, revealed the success of the operation was down to local residents.

He said: "What is fantastic about this crackdown is that we were acting on information given to us by members of the public through the DVLA tax hotline on 0800 325 202."
