A teenaged burglar who raided his own mother's home has been given three years' detention.

Ryan Hartley stole his parent's car keys from her bedroom during the break-in and drove around in her car.

A court heard that Hartley had failed to comply with a chance of rehabilitation following similar crimes in the past.

The 18-year-old, of Romney Walk, Blackburn, appeared for sentencing at Preston Crown Court for three burglaries related to a breach of a community order imposed previously by a judge.

Hartley was also dealt with for two other burglaries, theft and an aggravated vehicle taking, which he admitted.

Mr Ciaran Rankin, prosecuting, said the offences regarding Hartley's mother occured in June. A car key went missing from her bedroom and she suspected he was responsible.

In addition, a sat nav system, printer and video camera worth £300 were also missing from the house on Romney Walk.

Hartley went on to drive around the area in his mother's car.

Richard Bennett, defending, said the teenager's previous offending largely related to matters carried out against his mother.

He did not take advantage of court orders that had been imposed.

Mr Bennett said: "He knows he has to mend his ways, forget about impressing his friends, keep off cannabis and in reality grow up.

"He has been making some use of his time in custody."

Judge Anthony Russell, QC, told Hartley he had been treated leniently on an earlier occasion when given a community order for three burglaries. He did not comply with that order and they were three of the five burglaries for which he was appearing for sentence.

He also told the defendant: "In a letter to the court you have recognised the error of your ways. It is very much to your mother's credit that she is prepared to effectively re-engage with you".

Hartley was banned from driving for three years.
