DOG owners have been advised to protect their dogs from the dangers of Bonfire Night.

Rossendale Council's animal warden, Dave East, advised dog owners to walk their dog during the day or earlier in the evening rather than when Bonfire Night is in full swing.

Dog owners going to bonfires or setting off fireworks have also been advised to keep pets inside, draw curtains and if the animal gets nervous at this time of year from the sound or light from fire works owners can get medication from the vet.

Dave said: "If you are walking your dog in the run-up to Bonfire Night and especially on the day, please keep your dog on a lead at all times.

"There are, unfortunately, countless stories every year nationally of dogs being frightened by the fire works and running off and getting lost or being knocked down."

Dave also advised people to build bonfires one day before the event to minimise the chances of children or animals crawling into the bonfire.
