CRICKET chiefs are hoping maidens will be bowled over by proposals for two new junior teams being established in Burnley.
Girls crickets squads at under-11 and under-13 levels are being launched by Burnley Council sport development team.
Trials take place at St Peter's Leisure Centre starting this Sunday and then every Sunday until Christmas.
Already some budding candidates have been identified by sports officials and these will train alongside the newcomers.
Coun Roger Frost, Burnley leisure executive member, said: "This is a welcome move for the town. Not only are we batting our way into the 21st century with girls' sports, but by holding free trials we are opening the door to far more girls who may have great cricketing potential."
The sports development team has been working closely with schools and Lancashire Cricket Club to get the new squads off the ground.
Parents are also being asked to give their support to the girl cricketers as being part of the squad will involve travelling to away games.
