A SET of double yellow lines are to be removed after they were put on a private cobbled road by mistake.
The lines were painted on the road outside Darwen Catholic Club, in Wellington Fold.
Adrian Taylor, the club's president, said that yellow lines had never been down the road and they were "totally unnecessary" as it was private land.
Council bosses have admitted they made a mistake and would be removing the lines.
Mr Taylor said the lines had made a "real mess".
He said: "The paint comes all the way up to the building.
"It looks like it's been poured on. If you'd have put a hole in a paint tin and walked along the road, you'd probably have done a better job.
"The heritage of this place is important. You have to keep it looking to a certain standard."
Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration, said the matter related to confusion over an old traffic regulation order made on the road in 1975.
He said: "As part of the council's maintenance and upkeep of the borough's roads, we regularly replace yellow lines.
"In this case, the list was checked and the yellow lines were down to be replaced.
"However, after visiting the site, it is entirely possible that the yellow lines were never put down in the first place.
"With cobble roads, the paint is chipped off, rather than worn away. There is clearly no need for the yellow lines so we will be revoking the traffic order and removing them.
Mr Taylor gave the council muted praise for acknowledging its mis-take.
He said: "I'm glad the council have seen sense to get rid of them, but let's see how quickly they respond in getting the job done."
