COUNCILLORS are being urged to lobby County Hall in a stand-off over road gritting services in Pendle.

Brierfield and Reedley area committees had urged Pendle council to pay for extra grit bins after Lancashire County Council engineers turned down a request for more grit bins in the borough.

The committee urged Pendle's cabinet to pay for 10 new bins, separate from the county council's own provision.

Each new bin would cost around £300 - and another £50 to fill with grit.

In September, Coun Tony Martin, the county council's sustainable development cabinet member, overuled his officers' advice.

If Pendle council wanted to pay for the extra bins - and take responsibility for them - then Coun Martin was happy with the Brierfield and Reedley plan, he said.

But now Peter Atkinson, Pendle council's engineering manager, says pressure should be put on the county council to improve their gritting service - rather than the costs being met locally.

Proposals will be debated by Pendle's executive on Thursday.
